Will generic Car Power adapter with a little different voltage damage my laptop / notebook?
I have a Compaq Presario laptop V5310us. The AC says: INPUT: INPUT RANGE (basically any OS in any country) OUTPUT: 18.5V (18.5V) = 3.5a (3.5a) The car portable 65W generic power adapter I bought has the following voltage options: AUTO regulated DC power input adapter: 11-14V DC 8AMP MAX OUTPUT: (selectable) 15/16/18 / / 20V DC 4A 3.3a 80w max 22/24v DC. SP8II-80W What voltage should I choose? and is there any risk? I had been using a DC in the inverter AC in the car with the AC power cable to the notebook, but this seems easier and, as it might take less load on the battery?
The thing safer to do is buy a DC inverter, 300-500 watts is enough. This makes a direct conversion to 110V AC and then you can connect your laptop powersupply directly into it and not worry about the stress goes to the laptop. However, if you do not want to buy additional equipment, then you should use the settings 18 v to ensure that no overvolt your laptop.
